Your Number Puzzle Guide

Suduko

Suduko is a phenomenon which has been sweeping the world since 2004.  In the UK it first became popular when The Times introduced it alongside their regular Crossword.

Sudoku  which is sometimes spelled Su Doku, is a  logic-based placement puzzle In The United States it is better known as Number Place.

The aim of Suduko is to enter a numerical digit from 1 to 9 inclusive in each cell of a 9×9 grid made up of 3×3 sub grids. You start with various digits which are pre-entered in some cells these are referred to as the "givens."

Each row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Completing the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Sudoku initially became popular in 1986 and achieved international popularity in 2005.

Kakuro

Often referrred to as Cross Sums Kakuro (Kakro in Japan)  is growing in popularity as a Number Puzzle Game. Building on the success of Suduko they can be thought of as mathematical crosswords and have become popular in the UK through being featured in The Guardian newspaper.

Like the familiar crossword a Kakuro puzzle is made up of a playing area with filled and empty cells. Some of the filled cells have a diagonal slash through them from the top left to the bottom right with numbers in them which are referred to as "the clues."

The aim with Kakuro is to insert numbers into the blank cells so that they total the numbers contained in the clues cells.  As with Suduko no number can be repeated and whilst it sounds simple it is as hard as Suduko and becomes equally addictive!

Hitori

Hitori is another grid based Number Puzzle Game from Japan which is somewhat different to Suduko and Kakuro. At first it might appear somewhat easier than the other Number Puzzles but as more and more people are finding it can be equally challenging!

The most obvious difference is that a Hitori puzzle starts with a full grid of numbers! The aim with Hitori is to colour in the numbers in the grid. The rules are simple!

No number can appear more than once in any row or column. So if you had the number '7' appearing three times in a row on the grid, then you would know that two of them would need to be removed.

The coloured in cells cannot be next to another cell. In other words a coloured in cell can only touch another black cell diagonally. Finally, the white cells must be continuous and they cannot be separated by black cells.
